Last week was such a motivational week for me. As I taught my three sets of Brooklyn 7th graders, I embarked upon a very productive Black History Month conversation. One of the assignments that I gave them for their February break was to read and analyze Tupac's poem, 'A Fallen Star', dedicated to Huey P. Newton. While it didn't surprise me that so many of my melinated princes and princesses were unaware of who the Black Panthers were or even who Tupac was. What did pain me were the questions that followed my explanation of the Panthers. Martin Luther King, Jr. was Black? Malcolm X is dead? These questions only reiterated what I already knew. Our history isn't told enough to our youth. That's not by accident. When a group of people don't know their true history-struggles and accomplishments- then those people are oblivious to who they are. This is why we need to educate not only ourselves by each other.

The Black Panther Party received some recent shine during Beyonce's Superbowl performance last weekend, which heightened an interest in the group. Tomorrow, Tuesday, February 16th, is an opportunity to gain some insight on this significant movement that is all too often ommitted from History books. Too many people view the Black Panthers in the same lens as the KKK. Tomorrow at 9pm/8c on PBS, the documentary, 'The Black Panthers Vanguard of the Revolution' will put a lot of assumptions, presumptions, and misconceptions to bed and open the eyes of those who are unfortunately still blind. Peep below to view the trailer and don't forget to tune in to PBS tomorrow night at 9pm/8c and catch the documentary.
